Google Earth Instructions

download GE

To view the MLST databases using Google Earth you will need to download and install Google Earth.
If you have not already done so please click the image to the left.

A detailed tour of the software can also be found by clicking here.

download

After choosing the MLST database you wish to view , you will be able to download the KML file for opening in Google Earth by clicking the icon (as to the left).

----------------------------------

snapshot

Once you have loaded the file into Google Earth every country from where an isolate has been submitted to the public database will have an icon in the central part of the country

----------------------------------

When clicking on the icon within a country, a pop up box appears containg the number of isolates found in that country and a link inviting you to 'Click to view isolate STs'

Clicking on the link will open a web browser containing the

'Sequence Type Summary'

If you have enabled google earth to open a browser internally the data will be displayed within google earth.

The Sequence Type Summary page presents a table as shown above, in a similar fashion to the Google Maps View.
The first column indicates the number of isolates of the ST which is shown in the second column.
The allelic profile of the sequence type is then shown.
The final column in the table indicates whether that ST has been found in any other countries (the first number) followed in brackets by the number of isolates of that ST in the other countries.

Unlike the google Maps view we currently are not displaying STs by country in Google Earth (although this is in development.)

eBURST

The BURST algorithm first identifies mutually exclusive groups of related genotypes in a population (typically a multilocus sequence typing [MLST] database), and attempts to identify the founding genotype (sequence type or ST) of each group. - Full instructions for the use of eBURST can be found at http://eburst.mlst.net

To use eBURST you must have the latest version of JAVA installed - please click here to check

In the same fashion as the Google Maps view, rom the Sequence Type Summary you can view data using eBURST in two ways.

  • View eBURST pre-loaded with only the isolate STs found in the country you have chosen.
  • View Comparative eBURST comapring the isolate STs in the country you have chosen to all other isolates in the MLST database. This allows you to view STs that are only found in the country you have chosen, STs found in the country you have chosen and elsewhere and als STs that are only found outside of the country you have chosen.

Clicking the links will open eBURST - Please note eBURST can take a while to open and load the data.

Full instructions for the use of eBURST can be found at http://eburst.mlst.net

Briefly, to view a population snapshot -
  • Click on the 'Analysis' tab at the top of the eBURST window.
  • At the bottom left of the eBURST window in the 'Analysis' options, change the second box from the left to '0' (zero). - The first box is greyed out.
  • Click 'Compute' in the 'Analysis' options to the right of the box you have just changed.
  • Click the 'Diagram' tab at the top to the eBURST window.
  • Now click 'Draw' in the middle box at the bottom of the eBURST window.
  • in the 'Diagram' menu at the top left of the screen, click off the 'Show ST Labels' option. When viewing a comparative eBURST diagram, those STs that have a green 'halo' are found only in the country you have chosen, those with a pink halo are found in both the country you have chosen and elsewhere and all other STs are only found outside of the country you have chosen.
